Catch, Snap, Release – How to Take the Perfect Fishing Photo

A great fishing trip isn’t complete without a great photo — especially when you’ve got a monster gar or catfish on the line. At

BigRichFish, we see some incredible catches every week, and we’ve learned a few tricks to make sure your pictures look just as epic as the moment itself.

First, lighting is everything. Early morning and late afternoon give you that golden glow that makes colors pop and shadows soft. If you’re out midday, try to keep the sun behind the camera for even light across your face and fish.

Second, framing matters. Hold the fish horizontally, slightly out toward the camera, to show off its size without distorting it. Keep the horizon level, and make sure the background captures that North Texas scenery — calm waters, blue skies, and a proud smile go a long way.

Don’t forget to clean up your catch before the shot. A quick dip in the water removes excess dirt and makes the fish’s scales shine. You can also keep a wet towel handy to protect the fish’s slime coat before releasing it.

We also recommend snapping a few candid shots. Some of the best photos come from the laughs, the splashes, and those moments right before the big lift. It’s not just about the fish — it’s about the story behind it.

After your trip, tag BigRichFish on social media! We love featuring our guests’ catches and celebrating every successful day on the water. Whether you’re holding a 5-pound cat or a 100-pound gar, your photo is proof of an adventure worth sharing.
